It’s interesting to note the little-known friendly debate among the blogosphere concerning suburbs vs. cities. While all Christians will agree that both are mission fields, there are some strong feeling lending to either one. While Tim Keller presents a biblical theology of the city, Steve McCoy presents a redemptive view of suburbia. Is it really one or the other? Does God favor one or the other for man to create? Without diving into deep research and textual study, I think it’s safe to assume that both will be flawed in their respective areas. Where the city is strong in providing common spaces and closer living in community than suburbia, it doesn’t neccesarily always offer the best place to raising a large family with excellent schools and safety. Of course, arguments can still be made on both sides with each of these issues. But, I believe that neither side can ever argue saying that God wants us to live in a city or suburbs (nor do I think those that are writing on this topic think so either). Both are mission fields with unique implausibility structures in respect to the weaknesses of their communal environment.

I’m doing a post on the Urban South at http://www.redemptivetobacco.net . I’ve lived and planted a church in Urban Atlanta and lived and helped launch a satellite in Steve’s redemptive view of suburbia. (Steve, I affectionately call it suburban hell.)
I’m in Durham… Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill right now, and I’d to hear other opinions on the new urban south. It is an entirely different world.
